Renewable energy is booming worldwide, with countries such as the Americas leading the way. However, the big projects (those that capture the attention of the entire planet) are concentrated in emerging economies, such as China or India. So far, this is the “machine” with which we are going to absorb the energy. It has a power of 10,000 MW, but there is something that could go wrong, and that worries scientists, not only in the country but in the rest of the planet as well.

This state is ready to absorb this energy. A colossal “machine” to be built in the field

Mariah Wind Farm project is currently under development in some parts of America, with a total power generation capacity of 10,000 MW. Implemented in Panhandle, Carson County, Texas, the project is under construction by Scandia Wind Southwest, a group of firms from Norway, Denmark, and the Texas-based Premium Wind Coalition of Bovina.

The Mariah Wind Farm project is an onshore wind farm where the generation of electricity shall be harnessed using new, untapped, and renewable natural sources of energy to boost the power generation capacity of the particular state to meet the ever-rising demand for energy.

They envisage the project’s implementation in three phases, and the first phase has already commenced. The first phase involves the construction of a wind farm with a capacity of 2,200 MW, which is being developed in two phases: Mariah North also known as Mariah del Norte Wind Project and the other is Mariah South.

$22 billion to develop one of the most massive wind farms ever

The project has significant financial implications:

  • Project Value: It was announced that the project’s total value is twenty-two billion United States dollars.
  • Revenue: The Mariah unit tackles power generation and sales of electricity to Citigroup under an agreement made in 2016 and belongs to BlackRock Inc. However, the hopes were not met as the unit failed to produce power in February 2021 winter storms, and it later resulted in a $100 million lawsuit with Citigroup over the losses.

Four keys to understanding Mariah Wind Farm in Texas: up to 10,000 MW of renewable energy

The project phases are as follows:

  • Mariah North (Mariah del Norte Wind Project): In this phase, 96 General Electric (GE) 2.4 MW turbines will be installed, along with road improvements, paths, collectors, foundations, and a substation. An operation and maintenance facility measuring 4 meters tall and a tower measuring 1 meter are other notable buildings. Actual construction activities were initiated back in November 2013, while the construction was successfully completed in March 2017.
  • Mariah South: The main activity in this phase is the creation of a wind power plant with an installed capacity of 370 MW. Construction activities were carried out in November 2013, and the construction was completed in March 2017.
  • Third Phase: This phase consists of the development of the wind farm and involves the creation of a single wind farm with a power generation of 2,800 MW.
  • Fourth Phase: During this phase, a wind farm needs to be developed that includes up to 5,000 MW of power generation capability.

The power generated from the Mariah Wind Farm project will be significant in providing energy to the increasing number of people in Texas. When the project is accomplished, it will help to increase the state’s electricity generation, improve the overall picture of the country’s power sector, and improve its sustainability.

This new wind energy plant demonstrates how big projects have room in America, and not just in the great deserts of the southern states. The Mariah Wind Farm in Texas will generate 10,000 MW, enough to power an entire county. What’s more, it reminds us of a similar project, but floating over the sea: New York’s Empire Wind, whose latest updates we brought to your attention just a few days ago have thousands of people in suspense.
