In the face of the delicate climate crisis that has triggered all kinds of catastrophes around the world, more and more companies and corporations are seeking to make a positive contribution to the environment while benefiting from energy self-sufficiency. On occasion, however, some companies take this idea to the extreme.
A promising wind energy giant: How China wants to absorb hurricanes
So far, one of the most popular energy sources has been solar panels par excellence, but more and more companies are looking to expand their horizons and opt for geothermal, tidal, wave, hydroelectric and wind energy. Recently there has been innovation with large wind farms that can supply the energy demanded by large companies.
As expected, more and more companies are now looking to add value to large wind farms in order to innovate and make the most of them. This is exactly what the giant Mingyang did when it chose a double-rotor floating wind turbine and ended up creating the largest and most powerful project of its kind in the world.
The floating generator, which is located in Guangdong province, was created specifically to withstand large storms and use them to its advantage to generate more and more power, operating offshore and at shallow depths. It was displaced by a shipyard near Mingyang’s headquarters in Zhongshan.
Full details of the colossus that caught the attention of China’s energy industry
The floating twin-rotor wind turbine was named OceanX. It is based on a single platform with two rotors and two turbines which serve to significantly increase electricity generation. To explain a little better the great power of this wind turbine, it is important to mention that it was installed 700 kilometres off the southeast coast of China.
The OceanX floating generator has a pair of twin counter-rotating rotors, which are supported on a V-shaped structure, with blades that have a size of about 182 m in diameter to contribute to a higher energy output. By learning a little more about the dimensions of this large power generator, we can gain a better understanding of why it is so powerful.
What is its energy capacity? A stratospheric and almost unimaginable figure.
To be specific, this large wind generator located in China has the capacity to produce 54,000 MGh annually. Each of the rotors mentioned above is exclusively driven by a MySE wind turbine with an output of 16.6 MW.
A striking colourful fact about this floating wind turbine is that its rotors can be fully orientated, which was designed to achieve greater efficiency in generating energy and converting it into electricity, making it one of the most outstanding wind projects of recent times.
If we think about the number of homes that could be supplied by this floating wind generator from China alone, the manufacturer assured that 30,000 homes could benefit from this project. This is because the estimated amount of energy this generator can create is 54,000 MWh per year.
This is not only a great achievement for the company, but China will also benefit directly from this innovative energy project, as we are talking about one more project to add to the Asian country’s portfolio that contributes to positioning it better and better in the transition towards more renewable sources of energy that is being experienced globally.
