Ring-shaped engine

Koenigsegg has since become the name linked to high-performance automotive engineering, and this company is not shying away from shocking the world with its latest revelations. Sweden has just unveiled the perfect ring-shaped engine that aligns with the Swedish hypercar maker’s standards. Koenigsegg has unveiled its new electric motor called Dark Matter, which signifies a monumental leap.

The 800-horsepower (HP) six-phase motor, developed in house, will power the production version of the Koenigsegg Gemera, defining the new standard for electric propulsion. Dark matter is compact, lightweight, and extremely powerful, being one of the most revolutionary engines that the e-motors industry has ever seen.

Defining an entirely new standard of electric power

As a whole new way of thinking of electric propulsion, the Dark Matter e-motor is more than just an upgrade. The engine replaces the previous concept that used three separate electric motors. Koenigsegg has successfully achieved superior performance using just one electric motor. The single motor is able to deliver 800 horsepower and a staggering 1,250 Nm of torque (922 lb-ft) while weighing a mere 39 kilograms (approximately 86 pounds).

Raxial flux ensures efficiency with a 6-phase layout and unique design

While the performance of the single motor is something to rave about, the unique design innovation termed raxial flux is something else. Raxial flux is a hybrid between radial and axial flux configurations, allowing the motor to keep its power density while staying compact. With a maximum RPM of 8,500, this motor does not fall short in terms of performance.

Efficiency is improved by the six-phase layout that ensures power delivery, and reliability. All in all, Dark Matter could be one of the most powerful motors of its kind currently in an automotive application. The featherweight build and high-performance capabilities make it an ideal combination that resonates with Koenigsegg’s pursuit of record-shattering performance whilst maintaining luxurious flair.

Koenigsegg’s Dark Matter engine is strategically engineered for the Gemera

The Gemera was originally introduced in 2020 as a concept and is Koenigsegg’s first four-seater, labeled the company’s most ambitious vehicle yet. The Gemera was created to combine family car practicality with megacar performance whilst leveraging Dark Matter motors’ ability to achieve this bold vision. As per the new production spec, the motor plays a vital role, contributing to the combined power output of 1,400 horsepower in the hybrid version, and an astonishing 2,300 horsepower in the V8-equipped variant.

One compact motor comes with several advantages over other kinds

Aside from the numbers, the idea of using one compact motor as opposed to three makes for a more lightweight motor and ensures better overall weight distribution, which are all core components needed for luxurious drives that are still able to keep up with track requirements. With all-wheel drive functionality and enhanced performance, the car can still be used daily.

The Dark Matter motor is compact, measuring just 383,3 mm in height, 381,5 mm in width, and 135,5 mm in length, allowing the motor to integrate seamlessly into Gemera’s architecture. The Dark Matter motor supports Koenigsegg’s goals for modularity and adaptability across future vehicle platforms, opening doors for a new era of high-performance EV and hybrid vehicles.

Creating a future for hypercars out of Sweden

Koenigsegg has stepped up to the plate in terms of engineering challenges, and Dark Matter proves this. Although production of the Gemera began at the Gripen Atelier facility in late 2024, this advanced motor will be the one that becomes the tangible symbol of the company’s vision for the future.

The first customer deliveries are expected in early 2025. The age of the Dark Matter has now begun, and it is blazing fast. Yes, this Dark Matter engine will change the history of EVs.
