While making more bold strides towards sustainable energy, America has launched its first energy island. In fact, this is the first energy island throughout American history. Known as Block Island Wind Farm, this project produces approximately 18,400 MW of clean wind energy annually in turn powering every home on Block Island, Rhode Island, and an additional 12,500 homes on the mainland. The project is a beacon of resilience, reliability, and an advancement towards a sustainable energy future.

A transformation towards greener energy

At the core of America’s first energy island is Block Island Wind Farm that was completed in 2016. The project has since inception seen the replacement of four noisy diesel generators with 5 offshore GE Haliade 150-6MW turbines. This offshore wind farm can account for 100% of Block Island’s energy needs as the wind farm generates approximately 18,342,000 kW of electricity per year. The wind farm is also able to supply energy to thousands of households on the Rhode Island mainland.

This new energy island is perhaps one that shows renewable energy solutions are not only greener, but they have also become smarter and far more cost-effective in the long run.

Understanding the impact of the Block Island Wind farm

The Block Island Wind Farm has several environmental, social as well as economic benefits.

Environmental Benefits

The energy island has become a hotspot for marine biodiversity. According to a survey for local fishers, 44% had said that there was a noticeable increase in fish species near turbines with another 36% of mussel colonies establishing themselves on the turbine structures. All these findings are indicative of how renewable infrastructure can exist alongside ocean ecosystems.

In fact, more citizens who live away from Block Island are also preferring silent wind turbines to give them energy in their homes over solar power and other environmentally friendly options.

Social Benefits

The project is not only leading the way in terms of environmental benefits but has contributed meaningfully to social improvements too for Block Island residents. By taking away the diesel generators, noise pollution levels were significantly reduced. The use of 5 offshore GE Haliade 150-6MW turbines has halved the amount of noise heard by the locals. The sound levels were cut by 14 decibels which has assisted the public to perceive this project in a more favorable light.

Locals as well as tourists seem to be satisfied with the project’s social value and aesthetic. With an interesting wind farm to show eco-tourists and school groups, tourism industry has also boomed.

Economic Benefits

Economic benefits have also been rather substantial.  The construction process itself saw about 300 temporary local jobs being created. Block Island itself has experienced a 19% increase in occupancy on short-term rental platforms and an approximate $3,490 rise in monthly rent revenue during peak tourism visit times.

All these benefits show that this model for renewable energy can significantly drive economic growth in smaller coastal communities too.

The future means cleaner and renewable energy solutions

This Block Island Wind Farm is proof that energy islands can ultimately reshape America’s entire energy landscape. By staying committed to local partnerships, biodiversity, workforce development, and innovation, Ørsted is redefining the meaning of clean and renewable energy solutions.

Ørsted’s is well-known for its portfolio of both offshore and onshore wind, solar and storage, and other Power-to-X technologies. This wind farm could perhaps be assisting America to meet its climate goals as well. The wind farm further encourages American citizens to:

  •  Understand and explore renewable energy solutions.
  • Find ways to support local supply chains and workforce training.
  • Look for ways to prioritize biodiversity and coexistence with marine life.

America’s first ever energy island surely is influencing the new era of climate action and the art of community resilience. With a promise that in future America may run solely on green energy, the wind farm is showing citizens why green energy is several times better. With new findings like the vertical-axis floating turbine, America surely is revolutionizing wind energy.
