License plates are important identification markers on vehicles. They provide a unique identifier for vehicles which is essential for law enforcement and authorities to track ownership, registration, and any legal infractions associated with a vehicle. License plates also play a crucial role in crime prevention, as they can be used to trace stolen vehicles, investigate accidents, or enforce traffic laws. There are a number of design procedures license plates incorporate to ensure authenticity and credibility.
MA license plates with silver spirals- it’s not DNA
If you are a resident of Massachusetts, you may have noticed that your license plat contains a spiral-like structure in the center. It resembles a double-helix shape like that of DNA, however, this shape has nothing to do with some biology designs. The lines are known as an Ensure Virtual Security Thread (EVST) and they play a vital role for law enforcement.
The design was created by 3M, a multinational conglomerate in the technological industry. The technology is used to identify the authenticity of a license plat. License plates are coated with retroreflective sheeting. This sheeting incorporates a network of glass beads which act as prims to reflect light. Because of this sheeting, your headlights are reflected by license plates when driving. Road signs also use this sheeting so that they are more visible at night.
EVST technology ensures authenticity
When EVST technology is incorporates into the license plate, a hologram-type image is projected of the license plate when an image of the plate is run through a computer. This helps law enforcement identify if someone is driving with fake or counterfeit number plates. The technology is nearly impossible to replicate, making it an essential add-on for verify the authenticity of license plates.
“It essentially creates this floating image, which is what we call it. It’s very easy for authorities to see, but it’s very difficult to simulate and counterfeit,” says Christopher Ede, Global Business Manager for 3M’s Vehicle Materials. Massachusetts is currently one of 26 states which use this type of security thread technology. Only six states in the U.S (Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Hampshire) have no counterfeiting stamps, seals, or threads on their plates.
